How to use the MOST technique

The MOST Technique

To analyze the current business position of a company, a technique called MOST can be used. The MOST analysis technique is used to examine the current mission, objectives, strategy and tactics. MOST helps to identify if those elements are clearly defined and supported within the organization. MOST is a technique that investigates the delivery capabilities of a company, and is therefore a technique to investigate the internal business environment.

MOST

Most stands for: mission, objectives, strategy and tactics. Those terms are defined as follows:

Mission

A statement declaring what business the organization is in and what it is intending to achieve.

Objectives

The specific goals against which the organization’s achievements can be measured.  Our achievement, by definition, must be measurable.

Strategy

The medium to long-term approach that is going to be taken by the organization in order to achieve the objectives and mission.

Tactics

The detailed means by which the strategy will be executed.

Why the MOST Technique?

If MOST is clearly defined in an organization, the organization has a much better chance of success. MOST analysis also enables us to identify our strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, it is important that MOST is:

  • Clearly defined
  • That each aspect fits well together and that MOST is
  • Communicated to all managers and staff.

MOST must be SMART

In addition to the three conditions just discussed, it is important that MOST  is SMART. This means MOST should be:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant and
  • Time-bound
